For many Australians, the commute to work was a dreaded part of the day. It’s hard to deny, however, that the commute didn’t gear us up for a day of productivity. As the novelty of working from home wears off, do working from home ‘ fake commutes’ stimulate productivity?

A long commute time can zap us of the valuable energy we need to stay focused and productive throughout the work day. While daily commutes may have some upsides, especially if you use it to exercise, workers have now gotten used to the benefits of working from home and not having to commute to an office everyday.

An Australian case study into ‘Time Spent Commuting to Work and Mental Health’ conducted by Allison Miller for the American Journal of Epidemiology, suggested that commuting over 6 hours per week was associated with a small decrease in mental health. 

With this being said, the commute for several employees was a time when they could disconnect from home and gear up for the day ahead. This is evident as many commutes may include physical activities such as bikes rides which can help an individual improve their physical health and get into work mode along the way.

As Capucine Yeomans, and editor at LinkedIn stated, “the commute offers many benefits.” A working from home structure is expected to become permanent for many people, so ensuring continual productivity is essential.

“It sounds a bit ridiculous but the point is that, once upon a time, I used my commute to mentally prepare for the day … The time to walk out of the house and leave behind whatever was going on,” Dr Lyons, a lecturer at Monash University, says. 

As we have realised in the transition to working from home throughout the pandemic, the lines are blurred between work and home life. It can be difficult to achieve a health work life balance if you’re always working from home and start working earlier than you usually would. At the very least, commuting to work has some mental health benefits, such as simply getting some fresh air.

“For all the headaches commuting can trigger – from dealing with bumper-to-bumper traffic jams to being squashed into a train after near-inevitable delays – it does, in truth, bring certain benefits.”

As a result, WFH employees are implementing ‘fake commutes’ or virtual commutes into their daily commuting routine. How this ‘fake commute’ time is utilised is up to the individual. Even if you don’t do a full fake ‘commute’, at least stick to a (somewhat) enforced morning routine that gets you to work mentally prepared. Here are some tips we suggest;

  • Going for a walk around the block
  • Getting in the car and getting a coffee
  • Listening to a podcast
  • Do some housework
  • Give yoga a go

Clinical psychologist Jo Mitchell, co-founder of Melbourne’s The Mind Room centre, agrees. “It’s a physical pause in the day. That’s the benefit we’re missing. The key is to implement structure and routine, which are vital for health and wellbeing.”

How an employee starts the day is an important indicator of his or her attitude to the rest of that day. And it’s a realisation that has been hitting people.

Here are seven ways to impress at your next interview and get the job:

1. Prepare for the types of questions you’re likely to be asked.

The first step is to do your research. It’s important that you know the types of questions you’re likely to be asked, so make sure you read the job description carefully and make a list of the things that are important for this role. For example, if there are certain skills listed as essential (such as Excel or PowerPoint), then it’s a good idea to practise them before the interview.

If you can’t find anything specific about what types of questions they’ll ask at interviews with this company, then have a look around their website and social media pages. This will help with researching what sort of culture they have too – something else interviewers look at when assessing whether candidates would be good fits for their organisation!

When doing this research about the company itself, try not just focusing on their products or services – also look at how successful they’ve been historically in terms of growth (or decline) over time; who owns them now; how many employees there are etc.

Kobi Simmat explores the concept of grit, and how you can out-perform almost anyone with the application of a few simple principles.

If I’m sure about one thing in the dynamic world of business, it’s that you don’t necessarily have to be the smartest person in the room to achieve an outcome; you just need to be prepared to put in the hard work. This is, in essence, the bedrock underlying the concept of grit, whereby perseverance and commitment to a set of goals. Angela Duckworth, one of the leading psychologists in this space says that grit is the “perseverance and passion for long-term goals” that can lead an individual to get the result they want, in spite of mitigating circumstances that might have otherwise restricted someone’s ability to perform.

Today, I’m going to be referencing a Ted Talk presented by Angela Duckworth herself, which you can access here. Her methodology exploring the concept have taken her across a number of contexts, with the results of her team’s efforts shining a very interesting light on the results of grit in business, education and in people’s personal lives.

“In education,” she explains, “the one thing we know how to measure best is IQ. But what if doing well in school and in life depends on much more than your ability to learn quickly and easily?” Her research team went to West Point Military Academy to see which cadets would survive their military training, and who would drop out. They also visited the National Spelling Bee, and tried to predict the winners of the competition, as well as teachers working in tough conditions to see who would not only last the year, but who would be the most effective at improving learning outcomes for their students. She also teamed up with private companies and asked who would keep their jobs and make the most money. “In all those very different contexts, one characteristic emerged as a significant predictor of success and it wasn’t social intelligence, good looks, physical health and it wasn’t IQ… it was grit.”

“Grit is living life like it’s a marathon- not a sprint.”

“Grit is passion and perseverance for very long-term goals. Grit is having stamina, grit is sticking with your future day in and day out – not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years, and working really hard to make that future a reality,” she says.

It’s one of those things that’s difficult to study, and even more difficult to teach. As Duckworth explains, “to me the most shocking thing about grit is how little we know, and how little science knows about building it. Every day parents and teachers ask me “how do I build grit in kids?”, the honest answer is- I don’t know. What I do know is that talent doesn’t make you gritty. Our data shows very clearly that there are many talented individuals who simply do not follow through on their commitments. In our data, grit is usually unrelated or even inversely related to measures of talent,” she said.

Growth Mindset

Researchers agree that one of the best methods to manifest some of the basics when it comes to grit is to embody the growth mindset, which was developed by Carol Dweck at Stanford University. Growth mindset is most simply understood as a belief that the ability to learn is not fixed, and it can change with effort. Dweck’s research has shown that when kids learn about the brain’s ability to change and grow in relation to a challenge it is presented with, they’re much more likely to continue their efforts in spite of the fact they’ve failed. Why? Because they don’t believe that failure is a permanent condition, and that challenges can be overcome when there is a growth mindset implicit in the brain’s behaviour.

Putting this into practice in the context of my personal experience with doing business, I’ve noticed that some people are more likely to persevere through tough circumstances than others, and more often than not, this rising to the challenge has been met with success in the long-term.

Remember- the road to success is paved with failures that can slow down the speed of progress, but if you persevere and put the right fuel in the tank, you’ll be sure to reach your final destination.

Setting goals and achieving your goals as a small business whether they be financial goals like to increase profits or a more long term goal like expanding into an international market, is a vital element of creating a business plan. If your business fails to plan for the future and wings it on a daily basis, then you’re setting yourself up for failure.

However, the goals that you set can’t just be random. They need to be specific, measurable, time bound goals that reflect where you want to be in the next 12 months. This article will go through some tips in setting smart goals for your business, whether it be a small business or a larger one. Remember, your overall goals need to reflect the future vision you have for your business. Before you start creating a specific goal, you need to be clear on this first.

What are some examples of goals for a business

In order to set the right goals for your business, you need to underpin your vision and mission, setting goals that are tangible, measurable and get you closer to fulfilling your vision on a year-to-year basis. You should be setting goals for the next 12-months So that when you achieve them, you know you are on the path towards your vision. I think it’s worth adding that one of the most impactful goal-setting techniques I’ve taken on board with my organisation and consulting is to implement SMART goals; goals that are specific, measurable, actionable & achieveable, realistic and timely.

Break down your goals into sizeable steps or ‘chunks’, milestones are critical points along the way to achieving your goals and are the necessary steps you will take to get you there. You need to set milestones for each quarter- every three months you must reach each milestone to know you are on target for hitting each goal.

In terms of who you need on your team to build an organisation that can succeed, and how to build the right culture. You want to work with like-minded people who also love your vision, and connect with your mission and values; people who are willing to take ownership. You can’t find success in business by yourself, you need a team around that is motivated and driven to be by your side through the hard times and the good.

Some examples of goals that you can set for your business include financial targets, cultural targets and growth targets. There could be multiple goals stemming from each of these categories. For example, a growth target or goal could include winning a specific number of new clients or could include growing the size of your organisation in terms of staff. A cultural target or goal could include greater enthusiasm for innovation within your organisation or improved employee retention. As mentioned before, whatever your vision is for your business in the future, your goals need to match.

How to measure success

Measuring your progress on your goals is a key element in how to measure your key performance indicators – KPIs. KPI’s let you know how you are tracking and if you are on the path to achieving your objectives and goals. These goals could be in your marketing division, sales team, people, development, finance, operation and delivery and distribution elements of your organisation. Marketing, for example, should have KPIs that encompass things like social media campaigns per month, number of leads added to the database and compare these to a target for leads to build the database each month. If at the end of the month the marketing team hasn’t hit their goal, this might be time to take an objective look at the tactics they are deploying to see if a change in direction might be more effective in targeting new leads.

However, the success of some goals can be easier to measure than others. A cultural goal like improved motivation or enthusiasm is generally quite hard to measure with a specific number. This type of goal is usually felt within the day to day operations of a business, but indications of success can often be observed through other performance metrics.

At the end of the day, every business’s goals are different. Every business has different a vision for the future, a different why and different solutions to different problems. As said before, as long as your business’s goals are in line with its vision, mission and purpose, you’re on the right track.

1: Don’t Take It Personally

It’s worth remembering that this is just one person in your life, and you don’t have to let them affect every moment of your day. If they’re making work harder than it needs to be, find ways around them or ways to minimise their impact on your peace of mind. You can also try talking with them directly about the problem if not much else has worked. Finally, remember that sometimes people are hard to deal with because they’re struggling with something in their lives—maybe even something related directly to work! So if all else fails, take some time for yourself and focus on self-care instead- because who doesn’t want more of that?
